Lumoza Pilots Smart Lighting Network in Three EU Capitals

Lumoza has launched a pilot project deploying a smart-lighting network across Paris, Berlin and Rome. The initiative tests adaptive LED systems connected through IoT sensors to improve energy efficiency, reduce maintenance costs and enhance public safety in urban environments.

Implementation Across Selected Districts

In Paris the network covers key sections of the Left Bank with sensors that dim lights when foot traffic is low and increase brightness during events. Berlin’s trial focuses on Mitte district streets where data on vehicle and pedestrian movement informs real-time adjustments. Rome targets areas around major transport hubs to support evening commuters. Each city uses a central cloud platform for remote monitoring and predictive maintenance that alerts technicians before failures occur.

Technicians installed over 12,000 luminaires equipped with motion detectors, ambient light sensors and wireless modules. The systems integrate with existing municipal traffic and security networks while complying with EU data-protection rules. Early tests show energy savings of 35 percent during off-peak hours and faster response times for repairs.

Expected Benefits and Next Steps

Project managers anticipate annual reductions of 2,800 tonnes of CO2 across the three sites along with lower electricity bills for city authorities. Safety data will be collected through anonymised movement patterns to identify poorly lit zones that may require additional infrastructure. Public information sessions have been held to explain sensor functions and address privacy questions.

After a nine-month evaluation period Lumoza will publish performance metrics and cost analyses. Successful results could lead to phased rollouts in additional EU cities by 2026. Funding combines national grants with private investment totalling 18 million euros. The pilot also examines integration with emergency services so lighting can intensify along specific routes during incidents.
